How important is volunteering in European Union? Debate
On the 25th March a debate about volunteering in European Union was organised in our school. Students discussed the definition of volunteering, reason for becoming a volunteer and possible rewards from being helpful to others.
The reasons why people want to become volunteers were mainly personal. People feel the inner need to be useful, to be needed, thanks to helping others they also grow, they become more sensitive, feel the satisfaction and happiness when things they do make other people’s lives better and easier. Among other reasons students also mentioned meeting new people, making friends, bonding not only with fellow volunteers but also with victims. Working together in situations of, for example, natural disasters establishes strong links between people and brings them closer together. It teaches cooperation and support which is a tremendous asset when we think about our future. Those features are sought for in many jobs and that is why volunteering can also make your work opportunities grow.
Volunteering is not only about helping others, it’s also about helping the world around us, taking care of the environment, cleaning the earth, planting trees, making others realize how important it is to face ecological problems and solve them, not only talk about them.
Many organizations help young people become volunteers. They recruit willing and passionate people and send them to places where their presence and assistance is most needed. Depending on person’s interests they are trained in these areas for example medicine, education, or emergency rescue.
The debate proved that volunteering is a necessary thing, that by helping others we, the volunteers, also gain a lot: new friends, satisfaction, we develop our skills or simply fulfill our need to be useful. We also have the possibility to travel and broaden our knowledge of the world.
