Children’s rights debate
On the 29th of April a debate on children’s and humans’ rights was organised in our school. The students discussed many important topics applying not only to our country but also the whole world.
Firstly, the students’ knowledge of the topic was tested. They were all asked a few significant questions and the final result was quite satisfying. Everyone knew the content of The Universal Declaration of Human Rights and The convention on the Rights of the Child. That’s why we quickly moved on to the questions about our personal opinions. Mainly whether we agree that such documents should exist and why or why not. We all agreed that they are necessary as children need to be protected even more because they’re defenseless. These documents can prevent situations involving child abuse. However, we all acknowledged that some kids like to overuse certain laws to get back at their parents or avoid housework. Such behaviour shows that these children are disrespectful and should be taught the right thing.
Next thing we discussed were forms of children’s protection around the world. Students mentioned foundations and charity organisations helping children in danger of abuse. Not only did they name a few but they also shared stories about campaigns organised on that topic. As we are a member of the EU, the way its law affects children could not be omitted either. We discussed which documents include paragraphs proving that children are protected. Naturally we then moved on to another matter – whether all these laws are being respected. We concluded that they indeed are obeyed in most cases. However, just in case, we couldn’t forget about what to do when we witness a situation in which human rights are broken.
In conclusion students that took part in this debate spend their time joyfully. We became more aware of the dangers which children all over the world might experience. A debated discussion that took place during our debate made everyone agree that protecting humans’ and children’s rights is absolutely necessary. We are eager to share our new knowledge.
