Should voting be obligatory? Debate

September and October were the months of another debate held in our school. Its topic was “Should voting be obligatory.” The debate was divided into two parts, the first one took place in our school in September, the second one was held during the meeting in Portugal, in October.

Students prepared advantages and disadvantages of voting and discussed every aspect.

Voting is an important part of democracy as it is the voice of the people, they choose their representatives in the government and local authorities. Unfortunately, many people don’t fulfill their moral duty and stay at home instead of casting a vote and taking their future into their hands. If they don’t do that, they shouldn’t have the right to criticize what the authorities do as they didn’t take the opportunity to have their say.

On the other hand, many people are not interested in politics. Making them vote could be a little dangerous because if a person has no idea about the topic, the decision they make is not fully informed. It can even cause more damage than good as people we choose may have totally different views on governing the country. Without being into politics and how it all works people’s decisions are random and not focused on the real worthy causes and policies.

All in all, we decided that voting shouldn’t be obligatory. There should be more encouragement from the government and more accessible way of talking about politics to make it understandable for citizens and to make voting an inner necessity for them.
