European dream debate

On the 21st May 2014 a debate was held. Its topic was European Dream: the future of Europe and European Union. Students who took part in this debate discussed the future of the world in which they will be living in about 20-30 years.

Students addressed questions about the current crisis in European Union and whether it will survive, change or, being unable to overcome the problems, disintegrate.

Students were divided into three groups. Their task was to find arguments for each of the aspects above. The opponents of EU raised the issue of huge differences between European countries and their selfish interests. The participants underlined the fact that richer countries will not want to finance poorer countries during economic crisis. They also mentioned differences between cultures and values of countries belonging to European Union.

The adherents, on the other hand, claimed that EU itself is a value despite the crisis. European countries have bigger chances of overcoming any difficulties if they stick together. Both, rich and poor countries, benefit from EU even though they are obviously not the same. So disintegration of EU is not a good prospect for the future. Another argument discussed was the fact that each European country individually will not be able to resist powerful countries like the USA, China or Russia. Quite naturally the topic of Ukraine emerged and was talked about in more detail presenting successes and flaws of European intervention.
