European Citizenship – between myth and reality debate

On the first day of organizational meeting in Targu-Jiu, Romania, a debate was held. Its topic was “European Citizenship-between myth and reality”. Romanian students prepared arguments for and against which were presented and then followed by questions from the audience. Polish, Portugese and Turkish students expressed their doubts and asked for explanations about being European citizens. After students’ opinions, teachers took the floor. One by one, they expressed their opinions and how they see European citizenship in view of contemporary events. The beliefs were different, however, we all agreed that European citizenship exists, that we are all part of one “community”, which happens to be diverse and rich. We all have common European rights which make us united, and the variety is our strength as everyone can find something for themselves.

We all came up with a common conclusion – European citizenship is a reality for those who know how to use opportunities that European Union gives, but it is also a myth for those who have no idea how it works and what profits they can get from it.
