European Institutions

The debate in November and December concerned the topic of European Institutions. Students were supposed to prepare information about different institutions which play an important role in Europe. As there are so many of them, during the debate in November we discussed their goals and the way they work, and what they give to Europeans. Then, in December, we decided on the most important ones.

Of course, the first was the European Parliament which controls the rules of democracy. It was an unanimous decision of students as they all know how important democracy is. They compared it to other ways – for example the dictatorship – of governing the country.

European Council also had to be mentioned with its current president coming from Poland. It gives general political directions and priorities to European Union.

Council of the European Union which, among other things, deals with the budget and concludes international agreements.

The Court of Justice is one of the most important institutions as it controls if the citizens’ rights are respected and legitimacy of EU policies.

European Central Bank which task is to maintain the stability of financial system and control inflation level.

The European Ombudsman which deals with all complaints from citizens directed at institutions or any branch of the EU.

All of those institutions are indispensible for European Union to exist. Each of them is responsible for controlling a particular aspect, respecting policies, helping countries and citizens whenever necessary.
